Discover mediterranean vegetation in Portugal in São Mamede Natural Park
Serra de São Mamede Natural Park stretches from Quinta do Pomarinho, 40 kilometres and 31.750 hectares following the Spanish boarder, to the south. The mountains form a triangular massif of hard rock that is not eroded. The natural park is considered to be a "green island" in an otherwise dry and rocky area. The top reaches 1025 metres and is covered in snow during the winter season. There is a high humidity due to the height and density of the soil, which facilitates varied vegetation. Whilst walking or biking you will encounter the beautiful landscape in which the original Mediterranean vegetation in Portugal, of cork oaks, almond trees, eucalyptus, holms and sweet chestnut is alternated with strawberries, broom, rock-roses and heath. Influences by the Mediterranean climate, Serra de São Mamede Natural Park contains a great variation of flora and fauna. The fauna especially offers an interesting subject for bird-lovers. If lucky, you can spot the Bonelli's eagle, Eurasion eagle owl or Short-toed eagle hunting for a snub-nosed viper. It is also the hunting ground of the Black-winged kite and there are three kinds of vultures; the Monk vulture, Egyptian vulture and Griffon vulture. You can stay at our camping site, or hire one of our accommodation in the Natural Park, and be introduced to the Mediterranean vegetation in Portugal.
