Places of Interest Vila Viçosa
The Paço Ducal palace was the favourite place to stay for the dukes of Bragança. The rooms on the first floor are beautifully decorated and still radiate the wealth of a bygone era. The Room of the Duges is decorated by beautiful frescoes and tapestries from Brussel. Also the geometric gardens are impressive and reflect the architectural style of the palace in Vila Viçosa. Another special feature is the Porto do Nó, the gateway of the palace that is made from marble and schist with 'knots': the symbol of the Braganças.
The 14th century church Nossa Senhora de Conceição possesses a gothic Mary statue that is probably from England. Located in the former monastery Convento das Chagas are the tombstones of the duchesses. This monastery in Vila Viçosa is now a pousada.
