The city of Portalegre is located 12 kilometres from Quinta do Pomarinho. Portalegre, the former strategic city with three castle towers, is not far from the Spanish border and was very prosperous during the Renaissance. This can be seen from the rich Baroque architecture in the old city centre of Portalegre, where you can have lovely walks. The dynamic town of Portalegre faces the south and watches over the fields, olive groves, and the hilly horizon of the green Alto Aletenjo Portugal. Portalegre and its surroundings form an ideal home base for trips in the natural park Serra de São Mamede.
Places of interest Portalegre
The textile, silk, and tapestry industry led to prosperity in Portalegre during the 16th and 17th century. In the main street of Portalegre you can still see mansions in the Renaissance and Boroque style of that time. There is still a working tapestry factory that you can visit in Portalegre, in the former Jesuit monastery Rossio.
In Potalegre there is a carpet museum where you can see beautiful exhibitions of a huge collection of rugs. There is also an exhibition where various cork products are sold. Furthermore, in Portalegre you can also visit the Mosteiro (monastery) and the Sé (cathedral) that both have Renaissance and Baroque features and are really worth your time.
The environment of Portalegre is ideal for walking through the beautiful natural park of Serra de São Mamede with its granite hills, fields of flowers, forests, orchards, and ancient smuggling trails.
Nearby Portalegre is the small village of Crato, that is well-known for its ceramics centre. Flor da Rosa is wonderful to visit. In this pottery village a Order of Saint John monastery was built in 1356. It has a simple but impressive Gothic church with robust gothic cloister.
In the summer there is a musical program every Thursday evening in the convent garden in Portalegre. Quite often the theatre cafe also has attractive Portuguese music.
In October there is off-road spectacle called the 'Baja Portalegre 500' in Portalegre, which is organized by the ACP, the Portuguese ANWB. During the event at Portalegre famous international drivers compete in the categories motor, car, and quad. It is absolutely spectacular and a must see for racing lovers.
In Portalegre there is an abundance of restaurants. You can enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner and try the local dishes. Portalegre also has numerous terraces where you can enjoy a Portuguese cup of coffee or a glass of Portuguese wine. The prices for eating out in Portalegre are very reasonable.
