Castelo de Vide, Portugal
The small town of Castelo de Vide, 7 kilometres from Quinta do Pomarinho, is described by the ANWB-guide as the best preserved medieval town of Portugal. The picturesque town of Castelo de Vide is located in the Alto Alentejo Portugal region and lies on the slope of one of the northern foothills of the Serra de São Mamede. In the past it was an important stronghold on the Spanish border, now it is a lethargic town with a wonderful charm and where time seems to stand still.
Places of interest Castelo de Vide
Castelo de Vide has a 14th century castle in which you can still feel the past. Furthermore, there is a beautiful Jewish neighbourhood with the oldest synagogue of Portugal and many special, often gothic door portals. In the Jewish neighbourhood there is also the roofed Fonte de Villa, a marble Renaissance fountain from the 16th century. For the lovers of old churches and chapels: you can find no less than 32 of them in Castelo de Vide!
Further downhill is the 'newer' part of Castelo de Vide, from the 17th-18th century. Praça Dom Pedro V is an elegant square surrounded by baroque buildings, churches, and the town hall. Besides all these places of interest you can just stroll around in Castelo de Vide, through the many cobbled alleys and streets.
Surroundings Castelo de Vide
In the area around Castelo de Vide in Alentejo Portugal there are about 50 menhirs and dolmen, including the largest menhir (7,5 metres high) of the Iberian Peninsula. In the vicinity there are also Roman ruins and bridges. Nearby you can also find an Celtic roundhouse, an eira (threshing floor), and a late medieval cemetery.

Easter is a very important festival in Castelo de Vide. During the 'Semana Santa' (holy week) there is a lot to do. There are processions and there is good food with borego (lamb-meat) as the most important dish. Every saint has his or her own birthday and that is also a reason for celebration. Especially in the months July and August there are many fairs and festivals in Castelo de Vide and the surrounding area where local produce is sold and old crafts and music performances can be admired. Every Friday there is a market with fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and cheese.

In Castelo de Vide there are several restaurants that are renowned for their delicious local dishes such as calamari (squid), coelho (rabbit) and cabrito assado (goat). Restaurant 'Os Amigos' has soft goat meat and tasty calamari on the menu; 'O Miguel' is specialized in rabbit; 'Jhonny' serves delicious kebabs and fish and the 'Palador' also serves vegetarian and international dishes.
