Alentejo in Portugal

In the Alentejo you will find endless corn fields, interrupted by groups of cork oaks, fig- and olive trees.  It is an area with fertile soil. The Alentejo is also named the "breadbasket" of Portugal. Typical for the Alto Alentejo, are its enchanting white villages that rise up from a somewhat deserted landscape. Evora, Elvas, Estremoz, Évora Monte and Monsaraz are only some examples of such Alentejo cities and villages.

The Alentejo is relatively flat with its smooth hills, and sparsely populated. It is a region where you will be introduced to a rich history: stone cirkels, dolmens, Roman and Arabic ruins and many beautiful medieval castles. East of Portalegre, in the Alto Alentejo, lays the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. This is a fascinating natural environment with medieval villages such as Castelo de Vide and Marvão. In addition to the cultural element, the Alentejo is extremely suited for walking, horseback riding, biking and many other outdoor activities.
