Cycling in Portugal

If you want to take your bike or rent a bike at our Quinta, from Quinta do Pomarinho it is possible to make excellent cycling routes all year round, although the best time is in spring and fall. The Alto Alentejo is a relaxed area with little traffic on the road. Beautiful temperatures during the day in spring and autumn and even in winter make this an excellent environment for a beautiful trip through flowering landscapes, past castles and through picturesque white villages.

The regional tourist entity of Alentejo and Ribatejo

has developed a network of cycling routes, based on 3000 kilometers of paths, roads and alleys in the region, which form the 8 new Cyclin Portugal centers. These tourist and sports infrastructures offer the practitioner all the conditions for leisure, reception and safety, in a region that excels in authenticity.

Cycling in the Alentejo and Ribatejo provides for the use of cycling routes through the territory of the Serra de S. Mamede Natural Park, mainly intended for mountain biking, approved by the Portuguese Cycling Federation.

Cycling routes

Those who bring their mountainbikes or rent one discover that the hills of the Serra de São Mamede are perfect for mountainbiking, with trails specially made for this sport and plenty of walking trails and other kinds of tracks suitable for mountainbiking.

From our Quinta there are different possibilities for biking, to Castelo de Vide (7 km), to Portagem (14 km) or to the lake (15 km).  Also available is a megalithic route around the lake. These are only a few of the possibilities of the area.

The municipality of Castelo de Vide, in collaboration with the neighboring municipalities, has started a program that should lead to more marked, well-maintained, cycling routes in 2020/2021
